Barcelona have announced the sacking of Ernesto Valverde as manager.

After two and a half seasons in the Camp Nou hot-seat, Valverde has been given the boot and former Real Betis coach Quique Setien will take his place on a deal until 2022.

However, before Barca fans get too accustomed to the new man in their dugout, they'll likely be reflecting on the man who came before and how the Valverde era will be remembered.

And bearing that in mind, we've got you covered, because we're putting Valverde's time at the club under the microscope and we're starting with the 20 signings he made in charge.

It only makes sense when you consider he spent over €100 million on three players in as many years and we've decided to scrutinise the spending by ranking all 20 arrivals.

Ernesto Valverde's 20 signings

You can check out our final picks down below and see just how wisely Valverde spent his Barcelona riches:

20. Emerson (2019) - €12 million

We're many things here at GIVEMESPORT, but fortune tellers isn't one of them and this strange half-and-half transfer simply must finish bottom considering Emerson has never played for Barca.

19. Marc Cucurella (2019) - €4 million

Speaking of which... we have to put Cucurella near the backend of this list after just one appearance for the club and that was during his first spell at the club before Valverde even re-signed him.

18. Marlon Santos (2017) - €5 million

There's something about obscure Brazilian signings that gets the juices flowing at Camp Nou and this bizarre purchase - which reaped just a few outings - was completely and utterly forgettable.

17. Kevin-Prince Boateng (2019) - loan

Boateng seems like a sound enough guy, but whose practical joke was it to sign him for Barcelona? The fact he played four matches, albeit terribly, is literally the only reason he isn't dead last.

16. Jeison Murillo (2019) - loan

Look, Murillo was never anything more than a temporary, defensive reinforcement and who are we to rip apart the Colombian for doing exactly what he was intended for? Still only four games, mind...

15. Malcom (2018) - €41 million

Poor Malcom must have known he was badly out of his depth when he signed, although he did notch up four goals, and the fact he moved to Zenit St. Petersburg after one season says it all.

14. Yerry Mina (2018) - €11.8 million

Mina never really looked to be Barca's type of player - he seems far better suited to the Premier League - but they still made a handsome profit on him despite making just six appearances.

13. Gerard Deulofeu (2017) - €12 million

Just why? We don't know what inspired Barca to resign Deulofeu after falling off the radar at Everton, but slightly outperforming Malcom is about the only thing his comeback achieves here.

12. Neto (2019) - €26 million

If you look past the fact Barca have barely played him this season, we have to put Neto around the middle mark for being a superb back-up goalkeeper and he's barely put a foot wrong thus far.

11. Philippe Coutinho (2018) - €160 million

Coutinho never really settled in at Camp Nou and despite starting strongly with 10 goals in 22 games, he wound up being booed by his own fans and sent out on loan to Bayern Munich.

10. Jean-Clair Todibo (2019) - €1.9 million

We're giving Tobido the benefit of the doubt here for looking like a supreme talent and an absolute steal at barely seven figures. The jury is still out, but other top clubs will rue missing out.

9. Junior Firpo (2019) - €18 million

Speaking of promising talents, Firpo has slowly whipped up hype during his first 10 outings and the departure of Valverde could be exactly what he needs to kick on in Catalonia.

8. Ousmane Dembele (2017) - €145 million

Nineteen goals in 74 games for Barca is nothing to be sniffed at, but we're yet to see the best of Dembele coming into his third season and a slew of injuries really makes you question his fee.

7. Arturo Vidal (2018) - €18.8 million

You can't go wrong signing Vidal, can you? The Chilean has been a warrior in the Barca midfield, proving very successful domestically, and was purchased comfortably below his market value.

6. Paulinho (2017) - €40 million

What looked to be a brainless transfer actually turned out to be an inspired one as Paulinho produced crucial moment after crucial moment during his only season. Barca even made a profit from him, too...

5. Antoine Griezmann (2019) - €120 million

Slowly but surely, we're seeing the best of Griezmann again. Nine goals from his first 25 games is a solid place to start and he's really beginning to link up with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

4. Nelson Semedo (2017) - €30 million

It's a real shame that Semedo is continually linked with a move away because, although he's no Dani Alves, he's been a real asset for Barca on the right flank and will only improve as time goes on.

3. Frenkie de Jong (2019) - €75 million

It's still early days for De Jong, but we're already seeing exactly why Barca parted with a small fortune for his signature and he could be part of the furniture at Camp Nou for years to come.

2. Clement Lenglet (2018) - €35.9 million

What was initially greeted as a 'meh' sort of signing has turned out to be a serious coup and Lenglet has looked like the clear heir to Gerard Pique's throne after his first 66 games at the club.

1. Arthur Melo (2018) - €31 million

With over 50 appearances for the Blaugrana already, Arthur has established himself as one of world football's classiest operators and a worthy successor to the Xavi position.

He might never reach the heights of the legendary Spaniard, but he's already well on his way to becoming a Barca hero and he's certainly Valverde's best signing for the club.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

If that's not a mixed bag of signings, I don't know what is.

Sure, the likes of Arthur and Lenglet have been class arrivals for the Blaugrana, but Valverde seemed to step on a landmine for every piece of gold he unearthed.

At the point I'm having to select an up and coming defender with a handful of appearances on his potential alone in tenth place, you know there's been some calamitous signings along the way.

Both Dembele and Coutinho were signed for some of the highest transfer fees in history and neither have proven themselves to be worth even half of the price in the three years since.

As for Boateng, you have to wonder whether Josep Maria Bartomeu put on a blindfold and threw at a darts board with random strikers on it when he made that call.

Besides, if that's the choice he came to, maybe there's a career for me in scouting... wait a second, cheers all, I'm off...
