Quique Setién has been appointed manager of Barcelona.

The 61-year-old takes over from Ernesto Valverde, who was sacked on Monday.

"I couldn't have imagined being here in my wildest dreams. It is a very special day and I want to thank everyone who has chosen me," he said, per Barcelona.com.

"I am very excited about this challenge and project. I will try to convey my enthusiasm and my desire to the players."

"My goal is to win everything that can be won, in addition to playing well. I believe that in order to achieve victory, it is important to associate the two factors."

But how will he fare?

We've decided to have a bit of fun by simulating Setien's career as Barca manager.

And here's how it turned out...

2019/20

La Liga: Second
Champions League: Quarter-final (lost to Liverpool)
Copa del Rey: Winners

Good news Barcelona fans; Setien delivers silverware in his first season in charge.

The Catalan giants are able to beat Atletico Madrid to win the Copa del Rey.

But the bad news is the season ends in failure.

Barca aren't able to retain their La Liga title as they miss out by two points to Atletico Madrid.

Setien guides his side to 90 points but it simply isn't enough.

There's also disappointment in the Champions League. Barcelona beat Napoli in the last-16 but are then sent packing for the second consecutive year by Liverpool.

After the Reds beat Barca 1-0 at Anfield, a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp saw Barca exit the competition.

2020/21 (sacked)

La Liga: Third
Champions League: Semi-final (lost to Manchester City)
Copa del Rey: Winners
Supercopa: Winners

Setien guides Barca to two trophies in his first full season at the club.

Barca destroy Atletico 4-0 in the Supercopa final, avenging their defeat to the Madrid club the year year prior.

They also win the Copa del Rey for the second consecutive year under Setien, again defeating Atletico 2-1 in the final.

But both their La Liga and Champions League campaign ends in disappointment.

In the Spanish top tier, Barca won 30 of their 38 games and finished with 94 points.

But that was only enough to finish third, with Atletico Madrid lifting the trophy for the second straight season and Real Madrid finishing second.

With Setien's job on the line, he had to win the Champions League to carry on.

And he led his side to the semi-finals, with Barca beating AC Milan and Schalke to reach the final four.

But they were no match for Manchester City, losing 4-1 on aggregate to exit the competition.

Transfers:

IN:

John Stones | Man City | £51m

OUT:

Nelson Semedo | £49.5m | Liverpool

Setien was not aggressive at all in the transfer market and that played a huge role in his downfall.

He made just one signing during his tenure: Stones from Man City.

And he only made one sale as Semedo left for Liverpool. He simply didn't do enough to strengthen his side.

AFTERMATH

In all, Setien oversaw 83 games for his club, winning 64 of them.

He led Barcelona to three trophies and had a win rate of 77% but that was not enough to keep his job.

Setien lost his job on May 24, 2021, meaning he lasted just under 500 days at the club.

We advanced the game a few more months to see what happened in the aftermath of Setien's signing.

The Spanish manager did not retire but couldn't find another job in management.

And, in a bizarre twist, Jurgen Klopp replaced him at Barca. Whatever you say, Football Manager...
