Ashley Young is on the brink of leaving Manchester United after eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old will join Inter Milan in the next couple of days after United agreed a £1.28 million fee with Serie A outfit.

Young, who replaced Antonio Valencia as Man Utd’s captain in the summer, made it clear to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this month that he wanted to join the Italian giants. United have now granted the former England international his wish.

Young made 261 appearances for the Red Devils after joining from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011.

He won several major honours during his spell with United including the Premier League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

Young also chipped in with 19 goals, including two memorable strikes in the famous 8-2 win over Arsenal during his debut campaign at the club.

He also provided 43 assists - 25 of which came in the Premier League.

It might surprise some to discover that only 12 players have registered more assists in Premier League history - yes, history - than Young.

The versatile full-back has registered 69 assists during his spell in the Premier League with Watford, Aston Villa and Man Utd.

That’s more assists than the following, just to name a few: Alan Shearer (64), Christian Eriksen (62), Kevin De Bruyne (60), Paul Scholes (55), Eden Hazard (54) and Mesut Ozil (53).

Here are the 12 players with more assists than Young:

Andy Cole (73), Thierry Henry (74), Teddy Sheringham (76), David Beckham (80), James Milner (84), David Silva (90), Steven Gerrard (92), Dennis Bergkamp (94), Frank Lampard (102), Wayne Rooney (103), Cesc Fabregas (111) and Ryan Giggs (162).

Young’s tally of 69 is hugely respectable and shows that he’s been a somewhat underrated player over the years.

He was never the most talented player at Man Utd, but he provided plenty of moments of quality and, just as importantly, always gave 100 per cent effort every time he pulled on the red shirt.

Young knew exactly what it meant to play for United and became a leader inside the dressing room during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

He never caused any problems and will be missed by those inside the club.

And as time goes by, more football fans will surely appreciate what a great servant Young was for the Red Devils.
