England have revealed the squad members heading to the World T20 in Australia which gets underway on 31 January in Canberra.

New head coach Lisa Keightley has stuck by the team that outplayed Pakistan in their recent tour to Malaysia with Heather Knight reprising her role as captain.

There is only one change to the squad that dominated in Malaysia with the Sussex and Loughborough Lightning’s all-rounder Georgia Elwiss stepping in for Kirstie Gordon.

This will be Keightley’s first tournament as head coach of the England side and the former Australian will be looking to build on her side’s performance in Malaysia.

Speaking to The Telegraph Keightley spoke of her determination to reach the final of the competition.

“I’m planning to be in the final and I know the players are planning on being in the final.”

At the team reveal Keightley said she was looking forward to the upcoming matches and the prospects of her side while playing in her native Australia.

Freya Davies, Sarah Glenn and Mady Villiers are set to make their first appearances in a global tournament when the side heads Down Under in February.

England will face South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, and Thailand in their group with their first match coming up on 23 February against the South Africans.

“It’s going to be a fantastic tournament, there are really competitive teams across the board. You’ve got India looking really good, you’ve got South Africa our first-round match will be a big game for us and New Zealand look really dangerous as well,” Keightley told the BBC following the release of the squad.

First female coach

Keightley is the first-ever full-time female coach for the England Women’s side after taking over from previous head coach Mark Robinson this month. She has spoken about how important it was for her as a woman to get enough experience before could be considered for the role.

“I have no doubt I would have been competing with male coaches,” Keightley explained.

“To get this role when it was level pegging, I suppose that just shows the opportunity I have had to get the experience to put my hat in the ring.”

"I suppose for me wanting to be involved in international cricket, it is just a fantastic time.Women's sport across the world is building momentum and it is a really good time to be involved."

The only other female coach of the England side was former England cricketer Jane Powell who took on the role 19 years ago.
