Liverpool didn’t even play on Saturday and yet their chances of winning the Premier League title were given a huge boost. The Reds watched on as Manchester City dropped points against Crystal Palace, falling 13 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten side.Liverpool also have two games in hand over City. Only a collapse of enormous proportions will prevent them from becoming champions of England. So former Reds boss Roy Hodgson did his old side a favour. It looked like Man City were going to take all three points at the Etihad Stadium - a quick-fire Sergio Aguero brace gave them a 2-1 lead with three minutes remaining - but Fernandinho scored an own goal to help Palace secure a 2-2 draw.

The result completely ruined Pep Guardiola’s 49th birthday.

And it’s left Liverpool with one hand on the Premier League trophy.

According to the statisticians at FiveThirtyEight, Liverpool now have a 99% chance of winning the title.

Football writer Andrew Beasley has also provided some information about what Liverpool must do to seal their first title since 1990.

They need 33 points to be champions, with 17 games remaining.

In their previous 17 games, Liverpool have won 49 points.

The last 17-game stretch in which they took less than 33 points ended on December 26, 2017.

Of course, Liverpool fans won’t start celebrating until they are officially crowned champions.

And Klopp won’t allow his players to start talking about their title celebrations just yet.

That much was clear when Andrew Robertson spoke about the Reds’ title pursuit after they defeated Tottenham Hotspur last week.

“We are not celebrating in the dressing room that we are champions,” the left-back said, per the Mirror.

“We are just celebrating a nice win just now. Long may that continue, and then in May maybe we can start to celebrate.

“We'll let you say about champions. We won't say that because look at the run at both us and Man City went on last season.

“What's to stop Man City doing that again? Being unbeaten in every single game.”

It’s that level of focus and drive that has put Liverpool in this position.

Thanks to Crystal Palace, they're even closer to completing the job.
