Vincent Kompany will be remembered as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever defenders thanks, in part, to his incredible leadership skills. The Belgian was appointed City’s captain in 2011, three years after joining the English side, and always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism both on and off the pitch. He led by example and inspired his teammates. He even scored some hugely-important goals during his 11-year spell at City, including a header against Manchester United towards the end of the 2011-12 season and, of course, *that* absolute rocket against Leicester to help his team win the 2018-19 title back in May.After captaining City to success in the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season, Kompany waved goodbye to the club he fell in love with in order to become player-manager at Anderlecht. The 33-year-old began his career with the Belgian outfit and couldn’t turn down the opportunity to begin his coaching career back in Brussels.

His first season as a manager has been, well, a bit of a struggle.

Anderlecht are currently ninth (out of 16 teams) in the table, 25 points behind league-leaders Club Brugge.

Kompany has won just one of his last seven fixtures and was unable to prevent his team losing 2-1 to the aforementioned Club Brugge on Sunday.

Anderlecht took the lead in the 21st minute but goals either side of half-time from Hans Vanaken earned the visitors all three points at Lotto Park.

There was an incident towards the end of the match, though, which has earned Kompany deserved praise on social media.

Anderlecht fans threw a flare onto the pitch, next to where Club Brugge’s goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was standing.

The ex-Liverpool shot-stopper was preparing to take a goal-kick when the flare exploded, which understandably left him a bit shocked.

Kompany, like the leader he is, immediately confronted the Anderlecht fans and made his feelings crystal clear.

Respect, Vincent.

To stick up for an opponent like that - and having the bottle to give your own fans a dressing down - takes a special type of character.

He then led Mignolet back to his penalty area, while telling the Anderlecht fans to show him some respect.

If only more footballers were like Kompany.
