Manchester United fans are desperate for Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring in at least one new signing before the January transfer window closes. The Red Devils, who remain five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after suffering a 2-0 defeat away at Liverpool on Sunday, have been hit with the news that leading goalscorer Marcus Rashford could be out for at least six weeks with a stress fracture. The 22-year-old, who has scored 19 goals for United this season, went off injured just 15 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute against Wolves last week.Rashford subsequently missed the Liverpool match and news broke during the game that he will spend the next few weeks on the sidelines. The England international’s name has been added to the growing injury list at Old Trafford, which also features Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.

United fans thought Bruno Fernandes would be a Man Utd player by now and are hugely frustrated with Woodward that that deal is yet to be finalised.

In fact, it seems there’s now a real possibility that Fernandes will be staying at Sporting.

Fans are also baffled why the club didn’t do everything in their power to sign the talented Erling Haaland, who scored a 23-minute hat-trick on his Borussia Dortmund debut on Saturday.

With Rashford out of action for the foreseeable future, United are left with just two recognised forwards in their first-team squad: Anthony Martial and 18-year-old Mason Greenwood.

Signing another striker - even if it’s only on a short-term basis - feels absolutely vital for United if they’re to seriously challenge for a top-four finish.

You would assume, then, that Woodward and Solskjaer are interested in the possibility of bringing Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford this month.

Per Sky Sports, the prolific Uruguayan centre-forward has handed in a transfer request at Paris Saint-Germain and is poised to leave the Parc des Princes before the window closes.

Shortly after this news broke Man Utd’s odds of signing Cavani shortened to just 2/1 - meaning they’re now the second favourites to land the South American, who turns 33 next month.

It’s not every day that a striker of Cavani’s calibre becomes available - especially in January - and United would surely be mad if they didn’t at least consider signing the revered striker.

This is a player who has netted 198 goals in 292 games for PSG. He’s a natural-born goalscorer and remains a quality operator despite his advancing years.

Atletico Madrid are currently the 15/8 favourites to sign Cavani with SkyBet, while Chelsea’s odds have shortened to 14/1 this afternoon after Frank Lampard revealed in his press conference that he’s an admirer of the striker.

Tottenham, who could be without Harry Kane for the remainder of the season, are fourth favourites to sign him at 18/1, followed by any Chinese Super League club (25/1), any MLS club (25/1), Arsenal (33/1) and Inter Milan (33/1).
