Name a better defender in the world right now than Virgil van Dijk. We’ll wait.

Even Liverpool’s biggest hater would struggle to argue that Van Dijk isn’t the best player in his position right now.

He’s a colossus, his £75 million price tag looking more like a bargain with each passing week.

The Netherlands international set Liverpool on their way to a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday when he powered home a header in the 14th minute.

It was Van Dijk’s fourth goal in the Premier League this season, proving how much of an asset he is at both ends of the pitch.

The 28-year-old went 50 games without being dribbled past, a streak that ended last August, and it’s not just in defence where he’s recorded some impressive stats.

Van Dijk has been a bigger threat at the other end of the pitch than Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in the past two years.

January 31, 2020 marks two years since Ozil signed a £350,000-per-week contract to stay at Arsenal.

The deal made Ozil the highest-paid player in Arsenal’s history but he hasn’t repaid the favour with his performances on the pitch.

Per the Telegraph, the German playmaker has contributed to nine goals in 43 Premier League appearances since he signed that contract.

That’s five goals and four assists.

In that same time period, Van Dijk has contributed to 10 goals in the league - eight goals, two assists.

It’s a remarkable stat that says a lot about both players.

It’s worth noting that Van Dijk has played in 73 league games in that timeframe - 30 more than Ozil has.

But still, to have had such an impact going forwards is a testament to the centre-backs abilities.

He really can do it all.
