Liverpool vs Manchester United is still the biggest rivalry in English football.

The arch-rivals might not be competing for Premier League titles like they once were but they still love to hate each other.

And there was an extra needle going into Sunday’s clash.

Liverpool are on the brink of winning their first ever Premier League title having won 20 of their 21 matches so far this season before the weekend.

The only side they had failed to beat? Manchester United.

The Red Devils would have loved nothing more to be the side to kill Liverpool’s hopes of becoming Invincible.

Failing that, they would have loved to just avoid defeat. To be able to remind every Liverpool fan that, despite their title win, they failed to beat United would have been sweet.

Even club legends were praying Man Utd could conflict defeat on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Rio Ferdinand attempt to rally the troops with a motivational video before the match.

“I was part of the team that ended Arsenal’s run by the way, the Invincible’s - Wayne Rooney,” Ferdinand reminded everyone.

“Who’s going to be that man this time to stop a team going unbeaten? To stop a team being Invincible’s?

“Marcus, are you that man? Mason, are you that man? Anthony Martial, are you that guy?

“C’mon boys, give me something to laugh about.”

His passionate speech looks a bit awkward now and Liverpool fans are thoroughly enjoying having discovered it on social media:

Rio certainly wouldn’t have been laughing when Virgil van Dijk rose highest from a corner after 14 minutes to give Liverpool the lead.

And with Marcus [Rashford] injured, Mason [Greenwood] being an ineffective second half substitute and Anthony Martial blazing high and wide from a golden opportunity, those three weren’t “that man” to consign Liverpool to their first loss of the season.

The only surprise was that it took until injury-time for Liverpool to score a second as Mohamed Salah raced away to put the Reds 16 points clear with a game in hand.

They’re on the brink and there’s nothing Ferdinand or anyone associated with United can do about it now.
