Ever since Channel 4 briefly had the rights to show certain WWE events in the year of 2000, the premier wrestling promotion in the world has been exclusively on satellite television in the United Kingdom.

Well things are about to change!

Earlier this month, WWE made the jump from Sky Sports, who had been the home of WWE in the UK since 1989, to BT Sport, who are already making major moves to make sure wrestling gets a huge focus on their platform.

That move has led to even further big news in the UK - and it's that WWE is coming back to free-to-air television.

Channel 5 are set to show one hour highlight shows of both SmackDown and Monday Night Raw every single week, starting from February 2, per an official press release.

Every Sunday morning at 10:30am, a cut-down version of Raw will be shown for fans in the UK, and at the same time on a Saturday, SmackDown's highlights will be shown.

It may not be the full show - BT Sport will be paying a lot of money for that - but for those who do not have or can't afford satellite TV in the UK it will be a welcome addition.

After going on air on Channel 4 in the year 2000, the last event to be shown on free-to-air was Vengeance in 2001, which saw Chris Jericho crowned the first WWE Undisputed Champion.

But it's the first time ever that Raw and SmackDown will be free-to-air, as only Sunday Night Heat was shown on Channel 4 back in the early 2000s aside from some pay-per-views.

In addition to this, NXT UK has also been picked up by Paramount Channel.

It will be broadcast on Wednesday mornings at 12am, and it will lead in nicely for anyone who will be tuning into NXT live on BT Sport an hour later.

For fans who don't have the time to watch five hours worth of main roster shows every week, this deal is perfect and the social media reaction is already very positive - good job WWE!
