It was a tale of two calamitous sides trying to out-do each other's errors as Chelsea drew 2-2 with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard will be the more frustrated of the two managers after his side twice threw away the lead against the 10-man Gunners. Shkodran Mustafi made the first howler of the night when he totally misjudged a back pass. In a desperate attempt to save a goal, the ever-chaotic David Luiz hauled down Tammy Abraham in the box, leading to a penalty and a red card for the former Chelsea defender - prompting chants of "he's one of our own" from the home end. Jorginho made no mistake from the spot, but Arsenal teenager Gabriel Martinelli then hit back following a hugely impressive run from his own half.

Cesar Azpilicueta then thought he'd won it, only for Chelsea to be pegged back again by Hector Bellerin.

Lampard ought to be frustrated, with Arsenal managing just two shots all game, both of them resulting in goals. That doesn't reflect well on Kepa Arrizabalaga, either, but Chelsea should have been much more clinical, by contrast enjoying 19 attempts.

But what will Mikel Arteta make of what he saw? Just as the Spaniard was about to start writing sympathy letters to Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery after Mustafi-Luiz-gate edition 178292, he found some respite in the unlikely shape of Granit Xhaka.

The midfielder was forced to play at centre-back after Luiz's red card, with many fearing Arsenal would reach new heights of the banter era.

Instead, the Swiss international acquitted himself very well.

Arteta put his faith in Xhaka, initially deciding against bringing on Rob Holding and he was soon repaid.

In defence, the 27-year-old made two tackles, one interception and four clearances. On top of that, he won all of his aerial duels and blocked one shot.

His performance didn't go unnoticed, with Arsenal fans clearly being won over when his career at the club looked dead in the water just two months ago.

Xhaka storming off the pitch at the Emirates and shouting at his own fans to "f*** off" - all while Arsenal captain - is now a distant memory.

It was quite understandable that Emery stripped him of the armband and dropped him in light of that incident against Crystal Palace.

Yet Arteta's appointment presented him with an opportunity to start afresh and he's seized it.

When asked about playing at centre-back by BT Sport, he explained:

"I hope it's not a new position! [Arteta] knows I can play there as well and I tried to help the team.

"And I'm happy with the guys around making it easy for me today."

It once looked inevitable that Xhaka would leave north London this month, but all of a sudden, he would be a huge loss.
