Gabriel Jesus must have been a very relieved man during Manchester City's 1-0 win at Sheffield United. After slumping to a last-minute equaliser at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend, Pep Guardiola's men were desperate for three points at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night. However, that was never going to be easy when you consider the Blades are challenging for European football and have more points than both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. So, when they secured themselves a first-half penalty thanks to a foul on Riyad Mahrez, it was crucial that the Citizens took the initiative and converted from 12 yards. But Jesus saw his tame effort beaten away by Dean Henderson, albeit in controversial fashion considering VAR missed the fact he was comfortably off his line at the time of the save.

Sheffield United 1-0 Man City

In the end, Jesus' blushes were spared as Sergio Aguero scored the winner on 73 minutes, but it highlighted the fact that City should switch penalty takers as soon as possible.

Jesus might be one of the best finishers in the business with 14 goals in 28 matches, but his penalty record is incredibly suspect and especially when you take the last 12 months in isolation.

It's no wonder that Guardiola is floating the idea of making Ederson their new taker when Jesus, per Transfermarkt, has missed all four of the penalties he's taken in regulation time over the last year.

Jesus' awful penalty record

So, let us give you a history lesson and talk you through the penalties that Jesus has taken and bungled since this exact date in 2019:

1. Brazil vs Peru (22/06/2019)

Arguably the best penalty of the four. Jesus struck this spot kick pretty well during the Copa America tie, but still saw his effort pushed wide of the post by Pedro Gallese's fantastic save.

2. Atalanta vs Manchester City (06/11/2019)

The City man went viral for all the wrong reasons when he produced a cringe-worthy run-up at the San Siro and proceeded to drag the ball off target with a strike you'd expect in Sunday League.

3. Brazil vs Argentina (15/11/2019)

Here's where things get truly inexplicable. Jesus abandoned his usual tactic of shooting to the goalkeeper's right-hand side, but opened his foot up so much that the ball bobbled miles wide.

4. Sheffield United vs Manchester City (22/01/2019)

With a strange run-up that looked as though Jesus was going to propose marriage, the Brazilian completely telegraphed where he was shooting and placed his effort far too centrally.

Poor conversion rate

So, yes, there are some exceptions because Jesus did convert his penalties during the shootout win over Paraguay in the Copa America and similarly during the Community Shield against Liverpool.

But sorry Jesus, shootout strikes aren't usually counted in penalty statistics, so we're not making the compromise and especially when your overall penalty record is similarly shocking.

Prior to the streak we've discussed, Jesus also missed a penalty against Swansea City in 2018 and during a win over Tottenham in 2017, bringing his total number of failures to six.

Pass on responsibilities

Jesus has admittedly converted four penalties in his career - including two in one game against Shakhtar Donetsk - but that gives him a pretty dire conversion rate of 4/10 or 40%.

In other words, Jesus misses more penalties than he scores.

And with a record of 0% during the last 12 months, it's fair to say Jesus should stick to lurking in the six-yard box and pass on the penalty duties to his compatriot between the sticks.
