Spare a thought for Manchester United fans right now.Okay, so they’ve experienced a number of highs. The Sir Alex Ferguson era was one of the most successful in football history. But those times are gone and the past six-and-a-half years have been extremely tough. The Red Devils hit another low with a 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley on Wednesday evening. It was the first time that Burnley had won at Old Trafford since 1962 - 58 years ago - and they had lost all seven Premier League games against the ‘Big Six’ this season prior to the match.

Man United supporters inside the Theatre of Dreams expressed their frustrations by chanting ‘We want United back’ and ‘Stand up if you hate the Glazers’.

And they also used their feet to protest against how the club is being run, with thousands departing before the final whistle.

The scene outside Old Trafford before the end was damning.

Just look at the large number of empty seats in the 92nd minute.

This is a stadium that was once a fortress. Now the fans are eager to get out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen the club’s rut but he admitted after the defeat - United’s eighth in the league this season - that he can understand the fans’ anger.

“I can understand supporters are disappointed when times are tough," the Norwegian said in his post-match press conference, per the Daily Mail.

The stats don’t look good for the current United boss.

The Red Devils have lost more league games (12) than they have won (11) since he was made permanent manager in March.

How much of the blame lies at his feet is debatable - David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, all established managers, failed before him - but it’s hard to see how Solskjaer can continue for much longer.
