Nick Kyrgios and Gilles Simon gave hilarious yet frighteningly accurate impressions of Rafael Nadal whilst receiving time violations at the Australian Open this morning.Kyrgios and Simon were locked in a second-round tussle Down Under when the mimicking took place. The Australian, on home turf and serving for the second set, was given a time violation and proceeded to mock Nadal by sweeping his hair behind his ears and picking his shorts out. The crowd lapped it up and were in stitches at Kyrgios’ antics. This was to be expected from the bad boy of tennis, who has racked up numerous fines and charges in his career and has well-known beef with the Spaniard. However, what didn’t seem to be in the script was after Simon’s time violation in the third set. Simon was two sets and a break down when he was hit with a violation.

He then mocked Nadal by picking at his shorts which the audience – and Kyrgios – doubled over in laughter.

Simon took the third set in the contest.

The winner of the contest will potentially meet the 16th seed Karen Khachanov in the third round, with a likely fourth-round tie against the former Australian Open champion Nadal, who faced Argentine Federico Delbonis on day four of the tournament.

Should either Simon or Krygios win in that potential fourth-round with Nadal, then they would have tied their best performance at the Australian Open.

The 35-year-old Frenchman was thwarted in the quarter-final as a sixth seed against Nadal in 2009. Kyrgios reached the final eight stage back in 2015 as a fresh-faced 19-year-old, but fell to a straight sets defeat to Sir Andy Murray.

Neither man has made a Grand Slam quarter-final since 2015 where, as well as the aforementioned performance in Melbourne from Kyrgios, Simon made the final eight of Wimbledon and bowed out to Roger Federer.

In the same quarter of the draw as Kyrgios, Simon and Nadal is stiff competition from fifth seed and two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem and the 10th seed Frenchman Gael Monfils, whilst a potential semi-final against Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev awaits.
