The latest in a long list of fighters to call out Conor McGregor is none other than WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford.

Crawford’s promoter Bob Arum told ESPN of his wishes to face the former two-weight UFC champion McGregor after his return to the Octagon on Saturday.

The Notorious was successful in his first UFC fight in 16 months in a 40-second knockout of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in only his third welterweight fight.

The proposition from Crawford’s team was an MMA encounter inside the Octagon before a second fight inside the boxing ring.

Arum told ESPN: “You’ve got an elite boxer in Terence Crawford fighting an elite MMA guy in Conor McGregor under MMA rules. You don’t think that would be interesting and something the public would want to see? I think it’s very realistic.

“Whenever they are ready, we are ready. We’d do the MMA fight first if that’s what they want.”

In response to his promoter’s remarks, Crawford said: “I’m a fighter first. As a fighter, I would entertain it.

“I just have to have the proper time to prepare myself. It would be a little more than boxing training. I haven’t been in that [wrestling] environment in a long time, but most definitely I feel I can compete with anyone given the proper time to train on the MMA side, being that I have a wrestling background.

“McGregor would have to worry about my stand-up game as well. It would be interesting. He’s got good kicks and he’s strong. I’d have to prepare myself for those things, but I feel I would be all right.”

Crawford was last seen inside the squared circle last December, where he stopped Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the ninth round of a WBO welterweight title bout.

Crawford won his title from Jeff Horn in June 2018 and is currently undefeated in 36 fights.

McGregor has one loss in his only boxing fight to date, in the money-spinning contest with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, where he was stopped in the 10th round. He has a record of 22-4 in MMA, bouncing back from a defeat to Khabib back in 2018 with his first knockout at welterweight on Saturday.

McGregor has lots of contenders with the likes of Dustin Poirier and Jorge Masvidal calling out the Irishman, as well as potential rematches with Mayweather and Khabib on the cards.
