Liverpool have officially gone 40 Premier League matches unbeaten with a 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday night. It sees them match the perfect run of Jose Mourinho's famous Chelsea side between 2004 and 2005, despite almost dropping points for the second time this season. The trip to Molineux was always viewed as one of the last major challenges in the Merseysider's quest of invincibility and there was certainly a fair share of wobbles along the way.Manchester United had a similar unbeaten run ended by Wolves in the 2010/11 season, making it to early February with an unblemished record, only to lose 2-1 against the team in orange. However, any early doubts around Liverpool were quickly assuaged within 10 minutes as they punished their Midlands opponents from a set-piece.

Liverpool take an early lead

Just as Virgil van Dijk had done against Manchester United last weekend, Jordan Henderson rose to meet a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner and headed the Reds into the lead.

The response was quick, though, as Wolves reminded the leaders of their attacking threat; Matt Doherty heading wide from six yards when Raul Jimenez was lurking across goal.

Injury for Sadio Mane

And there was more cause for concern for Liverpool as Sadio Mane, who has arguably been their best player this season, was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury.

Kopites will be hoping the knock isn't too serious and the African Player of the Year was swiftly replaced by January signing Takumi Minamino.

Jimenez equalises for Wolves

The Reds eventually made it to the break with their lead in tact, but Wolves came flying out of the traps in the second-half and seriously stirred the pot with an equaliser on 51 minutes.

Jimenez went straight for the jugular in the final third, passing out wide to Adama Traore, before barreling into the penalty area to head the resulting cross past Alisson Becker's reach.

As a result, Wolves became only the third team - after Crystal Palace and Leicester City - to peg back Liverpool this season after going a goal down.

Alisson was then called into action shortly after: first making a fine save from Traore across goal and then dashing out to smother Jimenez as went one-on-one.

Firmino scores dramatic winner

However, it was Liverpool who had the last laugh with Roberto Firmino continuing his remarkable run of form away from home, fining the top corner with a fine left-footed strike.

The Brazilian has already scored winners at Chelsea and Tottenham this season as well as coming to the rescue in their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final and final.

That doesn't mean there wasn't a late twist in the tale, though, as Liverpool fans were made to watch with hearts in their mouthes as Jota bungled a close-range chance to make it 2-2.

But just as the Portuguese's shot missed the target, Wolves' hopes of becoming just the second team to take points off Liverpool went flying away in tandem.
