Fresh reports have emerged linking Liverpool with a move for Marseille defender Taye Taiwo.

The Nigerian is out of contract in the summer and is reportedly the target of numerous clubs across Europe and in the Barclays Premier League.

Along with Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United have been tipped to swoop for the 25-year-old - who believes that his style would suit the English game.

“If I was to depart, then I would not join a small club. It will be Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal,” Taiwo told France-Football last year.

“I am not scared by the level in England. I believe I have the right level to defend against [Wayne] Rooney."

The People now reports that Liverpool are likely to ramp up their pursuit of Taiwo should they miss out on Newcastle's Jose Enrique in their attempts to fill their problematic left-back role.

Liverpool are known to have identified the acquisition of a long-term replacement for Paul Konchesky as a summer priority and appear to be courting various potential targets.

Honduras international Emilio Izaguirre and Benfica star Fabio Coentrao have also been consistently linked with summer moves to Anfield but Taiwo may represent a more realistic option for Liverpool.

The Lagos native has previously revealed that his agent has commenced 'advanced talks' with one major potential suitor - and speculation is mounting that the team in question could well be Liverpool.

"I have made the decision not to sign a contract extension. I want to change clubs in June," Taiwo was quoted as saying by The Nation. "My agent and I are in advanced talks with a club from one of Europe's top three leagues and I expect to reach an agreement in the near future."

"Because I said I want to leave, the coach now decides when to use me. That doesn't bother me. I have made up my mind and I have told them I'm going," he said. "For now, I will not reveal it [the club he's leaving for]. When time comes, you guys will hear about it.''
