Roger Federer has survived an almighty scare at the Australian Open after being taken to a fifth and final set against John Millman.

The Swiss was on the brink a couple of times against the hometown favourite, but his class showed in the end as he got the job done in a final-set tiebreak.

Federer lost the first set 6-4, before just about getting over the line in the second thanks to a tiebreak.

As he has done for many, many years, the Swiss then turned the game on its head and took the third set 6-4.

However, the Aussie hit back in his home Grand Slam in the fourth set, winning it himself 6-4.

Millman then took an early break in the final set, going up 2-1, but the great that is Federer hit back right away to make it 2-2.

The set then stayed on serve all the way through to the final-set tiebreak decider, which seemed an appropriate way to end an absolute classic.

Unlike normal tiebreaks, the deciding set ones go up to 10, and it was the veteran who got the job done in the end, despite being 8-4 down at one point, bringing to an end one absolute epic Down Under.

Federer survives, but he will know just how close he came to being dumped out early on.

As for Millman, he deserves massive credit for scaring Federer in the way he did. There's no doubting the Swiss was questioning himself throughout the game, especially in the final set and the tiebreak.
