Twitter thread reveals 10 players with relatively low release clauses

Brighton & Hove Albion v Aston Villa - Premier League

We’ve already seen several quality players switch clubs for a relatively modest fee this January.

The reason? A release clause.

Liverpool snapped up Takumi Minamino for just £7.25 million, while Erling Haaland’s £18 million move to Borussia Dortmund shocked everyone with the nominal price-tag.

It gets you thinking what other incredible talents are out there and have a low release clause in their current contract.

Well, football writer Zach Lowy has created a brilliant thread that examines 10 players ‘with release clauses far too low for their current talent levels.’

Let’s take you through them:

Tomas Esteves | €10 million

The Portuguese right-back is still only 17-years-old and was part of the Porto squad that won the  2018–19 UEFA Youth League.

The Porto No.2 has already attracted the interest from Manchester City and Barcelona.

Italy U15 v Portugal U15 - Torneo delle Nazioni

Francisco Trincao | €30 million

Another young Portuguese talent. This 20-year-old forward has broken into Braga’s first-team this season and has already scored in the league and Europa League. He was a member of the Portugal U19 side who won Euro 2019.

Unai Nunez | €30 million

Athletic Bilbao have already lost Aymeric Laporte and Kepa Arrizabalaga to Premier League clubs in recent years and Unai Nunez could be next. The 22-year-old centre-back is a regular and has already been capped by Spain.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-ATHLETIC

Lorenzo Pellegrini | €30 million

Pellegrini is playing in his fifth Serie A season having represented Sassuolo for two years before his return to Roma. The 23-year-old playmaker has been capped 12 times for Italy and represents incredible value at €30 million.

AS Roma v Torino FC - Serie A

Mohammed Salisu | €12 million

The Ghanaian has become a regular in Vallodolid’s defence this season and many clubs will no doubt be looking at the 20-year-old’s €12 million release clause.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-VALLADOLID

Lautaro Martinez | €111 million

Not a particularly low release clause but Lautaro is well worth a hefty transfer fee. Not many clubs will be able to afford it but, if they can, they will be getting a natural-born goalscorer, who has scored 15 goals in 25 matches for Inter Milan this season. Luis Suarez’s replacement at Barcelona?

FC Internazionale v Atalanta BC - Serie A

Adolfo Gaich | $15 million

Another Argentinian striker but Gaich is less well-known than Martinez. Gaich is still in his native country with San Lorenzo but the 20-year-old has already played once for his country.

Lima 2019 Pan Am Games - Day 6

Rui Silva | €15 million

The 25-year-old is Granada’s No.1 this season and, considering his current contract expires next summer, could leave for less than his €15 million release clause.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-GRANADA

Chimy Avila | €25 million

Only Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema and Luis Suarez have scored more than Avila in La Liga this season. The 25-year-old is surely on the verge of a call-up to the Argentina national side.

FBL-ESP-LIGA-ATLETICO-OSASUNA

Jack Grealish | £45 million

Grealish has been brilliant for Aston Villa this season. But is this his last season at his boyhood club? If they get relegated, then almost definitely. But Villa have a chance to survive thanks to Grealish’s ability to win matches on his own. A place in England’s Euro 2020 squad and move to a big Premier League club beckons.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Aston Villa - Premier League

So, ten players around the world that could all be snapped up for a cut-price. There's no doubt there are plenty of other quality players out there with clubs wanting to keep their respective release clauses secret from the big sides sniffing around.

Of course, it’s a requirement in Spanish football for players to have release clauses in their contracts - even Lionel Messi has one (€250m). It often leaves smaller clubs in a position where they have no choice but to accept offers for their best players if the release clauses are met.

Expect to see plenty more transfers in the future where the bigger clubs trigger the release clauses of promising players...
