Earlier today, the world lost an absolute sporting great following the death of Kobe Bryant.

At the age of just 41, Bryant lost his life after his privately-owned helicopter crashed and caught fire in Calabasas, California.

In the five people on board who passed away, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna was one of them, and she was also a talented basketballer with a bright future ahead of her.

The world has been in absolute shock at the news that has filtered through in the past few hours, and tributes have already begun.

There are several NBA games taking place tonight, and the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs started their game by running out the 24-second shot clock to commemorate Bryant, and it was fitting as 24 was one of the numbers that Kobe wore through his career.

Fans of Kobe have also gathered outside the Staples Center to celebrate his life, and commemorations have been pouring in from his friends and former colleagues on social media.

WWE superstars have also been paying their respects to 'Black Mamba', including fellow Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle.

"Absolutely gutted to hear that Kobe Bryant and his daughter have passed away," Angle wrote on Twitter.

"Koby was one of my favorite NBA players to ever play the sport. Prayers to his wife and family. #RIPKobe."

Nikki Bella thanked Bryant for having an 'amazing impact on so many people', and legendary wrestler Ted DiBiase praised Kobe for using his fame 'to serve causes greater than his own'.

Many more have paid their respects, including Paige, former Laker cheerleader Carmella, and All Elite Wrestling owner Tony Khan has asked people to consider donating to helping the development of women's basketball to honour both Kobe and Gianna - and has made a personal donation of his own.
