Dean Henderson is also on United’s books and has impressed during his loan spell with Premier League side Sheffield United this season.

Many believe the 22-year-old will eventually replace De Gea at Old Trafford.

However, BBC Sport’s Ian Dennis is reporting that United are close to signing Southend United ‘keeper Nathan Bishop.

He adds that Bishop is 20 years old and has made 17 appearances for the League One outfit this season. Southend are currently second-to-bottom of the table, having conceded 69 goals.

The London-born shot-stopper has also represented England at Under-20 level.

The news has surprised many United fans, who understandably don’t feel that goalkeeper is a position that requires strengthening…

The Press Association’s Simon Peach adds that Bishop will initially be part of United’s development squad, rather than the first team, when he arrives.
