Dominic Thiem has an incredible record against 'Big Three' in last 12 months

After defeating Rafael Nadal three sets to one today in the quarter-final of the Australian Open, Dominic Thiem (fifth seeded player in the world), now holds a record of seven wins and two losses against tennis’ biggest three players in the last 12 months.

Against third seeded Roger Federer, Thiem currently has three wins over the Swiss veteran, taking no losses along the way.

He beat Federer two sets to one at the Indian Wells Masters in the final of the competition in March 2019, and then followed it up with a win at the Madrid Open in May, again two sets to one.

The most recent match between the two came at the ATP World Tour Finals, where Thiem beat Federer two sets to zero in the group stage of the competition.

Thiem currently has a record of two wins and one loss with second seeded Novak Djokovic.

He lost in the semi-final of the Madrid Open two sets to zero to Djokovic in May 2019. However, Thiem got his revenge a month later with a win over the Serb at the French Open in the semi-final.

His latest win over the second seed, was again, like Federer, at the ATP World Tour Finals in a group stage match between the two

Thiem’s most recent win over the ‘big three’ came today, after defeating Rafael Nadal, currently seeded first, in the quarter-final of the Australian Open.

This result meant that Thiem now has two wins to one loss with Nadal in the last 12 months.

His last win over Nadal was at the Barcelona Open, which was notably on the centre court of Barcelona which is named after Nadal. The win for Thiem was also on Nadal’s preferred surface of clay.

The pair last met before today in the final of the French Open in June 2019, where Nadal won by three sets to one.

With these stats behind him, will 2020 bring even bigger things for Dominic Thiem?
