Manchester United confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that they have reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Bruno Fernandes. The Red Devils will pay an initial €55 million for the midfielder, although add-ons could increase the overall cost to €80 million (£67.6 million).“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Sporting Clube de Portugal for the transfer of Bruno Fernandes,” the statement confirmed. “This deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms.”The Portugal international, who has scored 64 goals in 137 games for Sporting, has been United’s main transfer target this month. The Premier League giants refused to increase their initial offer until it was reported on Tuesday that Barcelona were interested in signing the 25-year-old. This prompted United to match Sporting’s asking price following weeks of negotiations.

Shortly after the news was confirmed, Sporting tweeted a pre-prepared farewell video for their outgoing star.

The one-minute video shows some of Fernandes’s highlights during his three-year spell at Sporting and lists his achievements.

The caption reads: “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

"Thank you Captain. Forever a Lion."

Emotional stuff.

Fernandes’s signing will come as a huge boost to the under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has landed one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders.

United fans could get their first glimpse of Fernandes in a red shirt on Saturday evening when they take on Wolves at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are also expected to announce the signing of 20-year-old Southend goalkeeper Nathan Bishop before the transfer window closes on Friday.
