Liverpool cruised to another Premier League victory on Wednesday night. The Reds travelled to West Ham looking to extend their lead at the top of the table to 19 points. And they managed to do so as they won 2-0 thanks to goals either side of half-time from Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.Jurgen Klopp will have been pleased that his side kept another clean sheet. That was the eighth time in nine Premier League games that Liverpool have managed to prevent the opposition scoring.

And a big reason for their defensive solidarity is Joe Gomez.

The English defender found first team opportunities hard to come by at the start of the season as he found himself behind Joel Matip in the pecking order.

But he has seized his chance since the Cameroonian defender went down with injury. Liverpool's defence has improved massively since Gomez became first-choice again.

The 22-year-old was again superb against West Ham.

And an incredible stat has emerged on the back of the match.

In Gomez's last 35 Premier League appearances, Liverpool have conceded just eight goals. Yes, just EIGHT goals.

Liverpool fans have been raving about Gomez in recent weeks, but it doesn't seem like he gets the recognition he deserves.

That might be down to the brilliance of Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman is the best defender in the world and often takes the plaudits in Liverpool's defence.

But the former Charlton defender has everything it takes to be an elite centre-back.

He's quick, strong, has good technical ability and most importantly he can defend.

Gomez has often found himself on the fringes of the England set-up. He's only made eight appearances for his country since making his debut in 2017.

But there's no doubting that he's the best English centre-back at the moment.

If he continues this form and if he can stay injury-free, he has to partner Harry Maguire at Euro 2020.
