The 1990s ushered in a golden age for underdog sporting comedy movies.

Films like 'Space Jam' and 'Cool Runnings' taught us with the correct application and team spirit, you can achieve anything.

One of the more iconic releases in this sub-genre was 'The Mighty Ducks', released in 1992.

A former lawyer, played by Emilio Estevez, discovered a new purpose from within his community service work in which he coached a kids' ice hockey team.

He coached them from hilariously rubbish hockey players to become state champions, all in 104 minutes of runtime.

The 1990s classic that is often looked upon with rose-tinted spectacles despite being averagely reviewed is returning for a reboot.

The Mighty Ducks will enter the ice rink once more with a Disney+ reboot in the form of a 10-episode series in the pipeline.

Estevez, 57, will reprise the role of coach Gordon Bombay, as was reported by The Illuminerdi.

As reported, Estevez will have a lead role in the series and not just a nostalgic call-back from the original film franchise.

Screenwriter Steven Brill, who penned the original trilogy, and the original producer Jordan Kerner will also be returning to work on the series.

The new series is slated to consist of 10 half-hour episodes and focuses on our 13-year-old main character who has been kicked out of the Mighty Ducks junior team.

Booted out of the squad, the boy and his mother are left to form their own team and will have to find players, a coach and a rink to play in.

A number of characters have already been confirmed for the series. Koob is 'a shy kid who always plays video games', alongside Nick, who 'likes to pretend he has his own imaginary television show.'

We will also see 'popular girl' Mary play off against 'unpopular girl' Lauren, 'who likes to wear wings and a cape at school and pretend she’s a fairy-magician'.

The series sees the pair try to be friends but 'the more popular Mary ignores her.'

James Griffiths of 'Cuban Fury' fame has been slated to direct all 10 of the episodes. Filming is to begin this March in Vancouver with a speculative autumn release date onto Disney+.
