Edge's emphatic return to wrestling is perhaps the best sporting story of 2020 so far.
After retiring in 2011 due to issues with his neck, the Rated-R Superstar waited nearly nine years to finally be cleared, and returned in Sunday's Royal Rumble match to one of the biggest pops ever seen in WWE!
Things would turn sour for him the following night on Raw though, as his former Rated RKO partner Randy Orton attacked him, and left him laying after a vicious Con-chair-to.
Fans were genuinely worried and also invested in the story due to Edge's history surrounding his neck, but fear not WWE fans - the Canadian wouldn't have been cleared if it wasn't all healthy.
Several superstars have had neck issues in the past which have forced them to step away from the ring, most notably Stone Cold Steve Austin.
- Undertaker 'trying to negotiate' a place on WrestleMania card
- Rousey wants a match with Ripley when she returns from hiatus
- MVP confirms he's wrestled his last WWE match after brief comeback
The Texas Rattlesnake broke his neck after taking a Piledriver from Owen Hart at SummerSlam in 1997, and issues from that began to re-emerge at the back end of 2001.
In March 2003, Austin wrestled his last match, but with the influx of money from Saudi Arabia for their bi-annual supershows, many WWE fans have been dreaming of Stone Cold coming out of retirement, just like Shawn Michaels did in 2018.
Well prepare to be disappointed Austin fans - as it's not happening.
“Basically you’re asking me, based on Edge’s return, would I consider making a return? No," Austin made very clear on his podcast, per talkSPORT.
Whatever Edge is doing has nothing to do with me. I’m done. I’ve already said I’m done.
“When I see a guy whose kinda had a similar type of neck situation as I had, or neck surgery in general, and to leave the business when he did nine years ago and then come back, I’m like ‘OK man, be careful out there.’
"Cause I haven’t seen you in action. And we know it’s a very physical business. You can get hurt any time, any way. It can be very dangerous. So just please be careful.”
Time to stop putting together those fantasy matches guys and girls, there's no Austin return coming!
