Liverpool skipper out of Europa tie

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of the Europa League last 16 clash against Braga.

The news was confirmed on the official Liverpool website earlier today, with the England international not making the trip to Portugal for the first round tie.

£35 million January signing Andy Carroll is in the traveling party, and is expected to make his European debut for the Reds, although could be used as a substitute.

Luis Suarez in ineligible and also doesn't travel, whilst the injured Martin Kelly and Jonjo Shelvey travel but are expected to miss out on the crucial. Fabio Aurelio and Daniel Agger are also out with injuries.


Kenny Dalglish has included a number of youngsters in the squad though, with Daniel Pacheco the most noticeable due to his previous European experience.

Liverpool traveling party in full: Jones, Johnson, Meireles, Suarez, Carroll, Cole, Pacheco, Kyrgiakos, Maxi, Kuyt, Lucas, Wilson, Carragher, Ngog, Reina, Spearing, Poulsen, Shelvey, Kelly, Skrtel, Hansen, Gulacsi, Flanagan, Mendy.
