Lionel Messi has been at his scintillating best again this season.

The Argentine, who won a record-breaking sixth Ballon d'Or in December, has racked up 20 goal contributions in 16 La Liga games.

Although he is rapidly approaching his 33rd birthday, many still consider him to be comfortably the best player in the world.

But has he been the best player in Europe's top five leagues this season?

Using statistics provided by WhoScored, we've listed below the 20 best players in Europe this campaign.

These stats only cover their performances in the league and not in domestic or European cup competitions.

20. Ricardo Pereira - 7.59

Pereira is the only defender to make the list. He has been a key part of a Leicester side currently sitting third in the Premier League.

19. Memphis Depay - 7.59

Memphis has been a completely different player since leaving Man United in 2017. He has nine Ligue 1 goals to his name this season.

18. Alejandro Gómez - 7.61

Gomez has scored six times and recorded nine assists for a Atalanta side looking to qualify for the Champions League again this season.

17. Casemiro - 7.63

Statistics aren't usually favourable to defensive midfielders, but they are for Casemiro. The stats suggest he's been Real Madrid's best player this term.

16. Riyad Mahrez - 7.63

Mahrez isn't a guaranteed starter for Man City - he's come off the bench seven times this season. Nevertheless, he's managed 14 goal contributions in the Premier League this campaign.

15. Dimitri Payet - 7.66

Now 32, Payet is still tearing up Ligue 1 with Marseille.

13. Angel Di Maria - 7.69

Like Memphis, Di Maria has thrived since leaving Man United.

Immobile has managed 23 goals for Lazio this season, the most in Europe's top five leagues.

10. Adama Traore - 7.78

5. Kevin De Bruyne - 7.96

3. Robert Lewandowski - 8.13

Only Immobile has more goals this season than Lewandowski (21) in Europe's top five leagues.

2. Lionel Messi - 8.50

Despite his brilliance, Messi has statistically NOT been the best player in Europe so far this season.

1. Neymar - 8.59

Neymar eclipses his former Barcelona teammate to top spot. He's scored 13 goals in as many Ligue 1 games, as well as contributing five assists.

Neymar has quietly been putting together a brilliant season for Paris Saint-Germain.

He's missed numerous games through injury, but he's been a class apart when he has been on the pitch.

Interestingly, despite Liverpool's domination in the Premier League, none of their players make the list.

Their closest player is Sadio Mane, who has been rated the 27th best player in Europe's top five leagues so far this season.
