Still only 21 years of age, Sofia Kenin has never been the most talked about youngster on the women’s tour, but today she cemented herself in Tennis history with a three-set win over Garbine Muguruza in the Australian Open final.

Having turned professional in 2017, Kenin had never reached beyond the fourth round of a major tournament before she arrived in Melbourne this year.

On course to victory, however, she has claimed some notable scalps, including home favourite Ashleigh Barty in the semi-final and rising star Coco Gauff in the fourth round.

Today, Kenin looked equally as composed as she had done in the six previous rounds. Muguruza took the first set 4-6, but from that point forward it was Kenin who took control, claiming the next two sets 6-2 6-2. After failing to convert her first match point, victory was eventually sealed when Muguruza double-faulted, which was a recurring theme throughout the match.

The 14th seed has thus become the eighth winner of the Australian Open in the past 12 years, winning in just over two hours. Born in Russia, but raised in Florida, Kenin became a star from the age of just five, featuring on magazine covers and training with the likes of Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters.

Yet, the promising career that many had anticipated has fallen under the radar in recent times, especially with the rise of 15-year-old Coco-Gauff. Kevin's odds leading into the tournament were, therefore, a staggering 35/1. Now though, Kenin has finally achieved her lifelong ambition.

"Dreams come true,” she said. “If you have a dream then go for it - it will come true. These two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life."

Kenin becomes the youngest winner of a Grand-Slam since Serena Williams at the U.S Open in 2002. Since then, Williams has gone on to win a further 22 grand-slams. Whilst Kenin will obviously struggle to get anywhere near this unprecedented tally, this is certainly set to be the first of many Grand-Slam triumphs.
