Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita scores own goal by carrying the ball over his line

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita had an absolute nightmare during Saturday’s fixture with Sheffield United.

The Spaniard scored an own-goal in bizarre circumstances, by carrying the ball over his own line after failing to deal with a corner.

His mistake, which came just before the hour mark with the score at 0-0 really has to be seen to be believed.

What a howler. There’s absolutely no defending that, it’s just a horrible, freak moment for the goalkeeper, who has been Palace’s number one this season.

Unfortunately, his side were unable to bail him out either, suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to the Blades.

The result leaves Roy Hodgson’s side 13th in the Premier League table, winless in their last five.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, are climbing up the table. They’re now fifth, just five points behind the Champions League places.

Not bad considering they were promoted last season.

These three points though were handed to them on a plate by Guaita. He won’t want to see that moment again on Match of the Day tonight.

Speaking after the game, Hodgson made sure not to blame his goalkeeper for the error.

“It was a very difficult day for goalkeepers. It was a very windy day and not an easy game to play in that respect,” he said.

“You don’t have to be a football expert to know it was a goalkeeping error. He was the first one when he came in after the game to put his hands up and apologise for it.

“But from our point of view – mine, the coaching staff and the players – it was you don’t apologise to anyone because it is thanks to you we are where we are.”

Fair play to Hodgson for coming out and defending his player. Hopefully, Palace fans will go easy on Guaita too, even though he did cost them points on Saturday.
