Liverpool moved a quite ridiculous 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 4-0 victory at home to Southampton.

The scoreline doesn’t quite tell the whole story, though, as Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side gave the runaway leaders a tough match - especially in the first half.

The scores were level at 0-0 at the break, and Liverpool had Alisson to thank for that.

It was former Liverpool man Danny Ings causing them all sorts of problems.

The striker had terrible luck with injuries at Anfield but is currently in the form of his life, having scored 14 league goals this season.

But he wasn’t able to add to his tally before he was substituted in the 70th-minute.

He was given a fantastic reception by the whole stadium as he trudged off.

Then at full-time, he was treated like a hero.

Every Liverpool player to a man - and Jurgen Klopp - gave Ings a massive hug. They’re clearly buzzing to see him doing well at Southampton after his injury problems at Liverpool.

It was something that Liverpool fans enjoyed:

Klopp even dedicated a few paragraphs to Ings ahead of the match and couldn’t hide his delight at his former player’s form.

“They have international quality throughout and they play to their maximum. This makes them a dangerous opponent. And of course there is one player in their ranks we know better than most: Mr Danny Ings,” Klopp said.

“For 90-plus minutes today he is our opponent, but other than that he is always our friend at Liverpool. I am not even half-a-per-cent surprised to see what he does this season. Richly deserved, also.

“I would never dream of telling Gareth Southgate what he should be considering, but given he is a top operator and clever coach, I’m sure he’s aware that Danny is someone who could help his country again in the near future.

“Today I hope he has an off day, but other than that his story this season really brings joy to those of us lucky enough to know him.”

Klopp got his wish that Ings had an “off day” but if he continues his form, he’ll surely be in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.
