Liverpool continued their scintillating form with a 4-0 thumping of Southampton on Saturday afternoon. But they didn't have things all their own way.Jurgen Klopp's side were far from their best in the first half and could not break their opponents down before the break.Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain eased Anfield nerves just after half-time, though, and further goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah (2) gave them a comfortable victory. However, the scoreline could have been very different.

Southampton started well and were pushing Liverpool back in the opening stages.

In the 10th minute, Andy Robertson was trapped in his own box and under pressure from two Southampton players.

While on the byline, the Scottish defender poked the ball back to Alisson as he desperately tried to get himself out of danger.

The Brazilian goalkeeper then proceeded to pick the ball up in what looked like a clear backpass.

The referee, Kevin Friend, waved away Southampton's protests away.

Watch the incident below:

GIVEMESPORT'S JAMES STROUD SAYS:

Liverpool really did get lucky here. That looks like an obvious back pass.

It begs the question, why did Friend not give Southampton an indirect free-kick?

Many have said that Robertson's actions were not intentional.

There has been an argument that he tried to play the ball off a Southampton defender.

That, to me, does not look like the case. That would have been a very risky move by Robertson to try that in such a dangerous area.

Others have argued that the ball knicked off a Southampton defender before going through to Alisson.

That was also not the case. You can see it went through the legs of Danny Ings and did not touch him at all.

Although it's unknown why it wasn't given, it's likely that friend thought it touched a Southampton defender too.

But, it didn't, meaning Liverpool got away with one.

It could have been a game changer, too.

Southampton would have had a golden opportunity to convert from the free-kick.

And if they were able to score and take the lead, it would have been a very different game.
