Liverpool are on course to complete one of the best seasons in the club's history.

The Reds extended their lead at the top of the table to a staggering 22 points with a 4-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

On top of that, they opened up the biggest lead by any team at the end of a day in English top-flight history as they maintained their unbeaten run in the top division.

This season's inevitable glory will add to the heroics of last season which saw Liverpool clinch the Champions League title for the first time since 2005.

One of the highlights of that famous European run of last year saw the Reds overturn a 3-0 first leg defeat to Barcelona to win 4-3 on aggregate.

And one man who had a foot in both camps was former midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The Argentine spent three years at Liverpool before moving to Barcelona in 2010 where he'd go on to represent the club for eight years.

And despite spending more time with the Catalan giants, the 35-year-old claimed that he preferred his spell at Anfield.

Speaking to CNN, Mascherano said: "I obviously have a lot of love for Barcelona, I spent the best years of my career there but I would choose Liverpool.

“I feel something special for them. Yes, right now is the best in the world, Liverpool represents me a lot.”

During his time at Liverpool, Mascherano found trophies hard to come by.

However, his eight years at Barcelona told a completely different story.

The former Argentina international won 19 pieces of silverware during his time at the Nou Camp, including two Champions League winners' medals and five La Liga titles.

Similarly to Liverpool, Barcelona are also fighting for another league title but currently trail Real Madrid by six points going into tonight's game with Levante.
