Raheem Sterling was fortunate to escape without a red card during the first half between Tottenham and Manchester City. The City winger overran the ball just outside Spurs’ penalty area and produced a studs-up tackle on Alli.Mike Dean was just yards away and instantly brandished a yellow card. But while Alli was down receiving treatment, VAR checked to see if it was worthy of a red.

The slow-motion replay certainly didn’t look good as Sterling caught Alli’s ankle with his studs.

One man that couldn’t believe it wasn’t a red card was Jose Mourinho.

He was seen watching the tackle back on the touchline and put his hands on his head in disbelief.

He clearly thought Sterling deserved to be sent off.

If Sterling deserved to be sent off for that tackle, he certainly deserved to be sent off at the end of the first half in what was a crazy few minutes.

Sergio Aguero went down in the box under Serge Aurier's tackle but Dean waved play on. As the ball stayed for the next two minutes, Dean stopped the match and pointed to the spot after receiving information from VAR.

Ilkay Gundogan stepped up but saw his penalty saved by Hugo Lloris. But that wasn't the end of the drama as Sterling went down looking for another penalty from the rebound.

Dean and VAR agreed it wasn't a spot-kick but Sterling escaped a second yellow for diving.

Phew.
