The Kansas City Chiefs have won Super Bowl LIV after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

A late touchdown by running back Damien Williams helped the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl triumph in franchise history.

It could well be the first of many for young quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The 49ers reached the playoffs after finishing 13-3 in the regular season, before resounding playoff wins over the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers earned them a Super Bowl berth.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs were 12-4 in the regular season. They scored a total of 86 points in playoff wins over the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans to reach the big game.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has earned rave reviews for building an offensive system that has proven to be immensely difficult to stop.

San Francisco's offence averaged 235.5 rushing yards per game in the wins over the Vikings and the Packers.

"A creative genius in a sense," Chiefs' safety Tyrann Mathieu said about Shanahan ahead of the game, per Sky Sports.

"And they find ways to get good leverage on you - they motion a lot, they disguise, they window dress things a lot. And I think they have the right players in the right spots, you know?"

The Chiefs, meanwhile, have also thrived with their head coach's innovative playcalling.

Andy Reid's reputation as one of the brightest offensive minds in the league is already clear and he has the perfect quarterback to lead his system in Patrick Mahomes.

"We throw a lot of verbiage at him for those plays that we run every week, and he’s able to make the other ones evaporate and put the new ones in without any flaws, so he’s special that way," Reid said about Mahomes ahead of the Super Bowl, per National Post.

"And he’s got great vision on the field, so he can see, which becomes important for quarterbacks, in particular, the way he does things.

“He utilises all his receiver, and I always tell the guys, ‘There’s never a dead route, there’s no clearing routes, everybody is alive because of his vision. He’ll shoot you and you better be ready.’

“I like the way he goes about his business, and he still have plenty of room to grow, which is exciting.”
