James Milner will go down as one of the greatest free transfers in football history.Liverpool snapped up the versatile midfielder from Manchester City in 2015 and he has gone on to become a cult hero with the Reds.He spent an entire season deputising at left-back due to Alberto Moreno's ineptness and is one of the team's true leaders on and off the pitch.Jurgen Klopp can always rely on Milner to perform in the big games and it was telling that the German was mortified when the Englishman picked up an injury against Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.Milner hasn't featured since for Liverpool since, but he's still having a profound effect on the club behind-the-scenes.

The 34-year-old was at Anfield last night to watch Neil Critchley's U23 side beat Shrewsbury 1-0 and the Liverpool youth manager revealed how Milner had aided his troops in the buildup to the game.

Critchley told reporters after the game: “James Milner trained with us yesterday and asked if he could come along. He gave words of advice to the players in the dressing room before the game and I can’t thank him enough.”

Milner could have been soaking up the warm weather with Klopp and the senior team on their winter break, but he wanted to help the youngsters - what a man.

Liverpool are lucky to have such a consummate and dedicated professional in their ranks, because they do not come around often.

Milner tweeted his admiration for the kids after the game, writing: "Outstanding performance from the boys, Critch and his staff & fantastic turn out from the fans."

Liverpool are just doing everything right at the moment.

The first-team are dominant, the youth is thriving and Klopp has helped install a winning mentality that could see the Reds reign supreme for many years to come.
