Big things were expected of Nicolas Pepe when he arrived at Arsenal. The Gunners paid a club-record £72 million to secure his services from Lille last summer, but it's fair to say he's been rather underwhelming. Pepe has just five goals and four assists in 27 appearances this season and those are hardly stats to write home about. Of course, it's well-known that it can take time to adjust to the Premier League, so we fully expect the Ivorian to grow into his game in the coming years. Given his struggles, it would be fair to say Pepe has come up against a few tough defenders in England's top flight, right?

Well, maybe not.

This week, the forward took part in a Q&A session with teammate Matteo Guendouzi and he was asked to name the toughest opponent he's ever faced.

But he didn't answer, suggesting that nobody has earned that title yet. Check it out:

You've got to admire the confidence... We just don't really believe him.

In fact, he's been kept quiet in 16 of the 21 Premier League games he's played this season. There are plenty of names he could pick.

Despite a slow start to life in north London, Pepe is confident that he will improve very soon.

"Things are definitely going better," he said, per the Daily Mail.

"I am still learning and there is plenty of room for improvement, but in terms of understanding, things are definitely becoming easier.

"Mikel [Arteta] has explained exactly what he would like me to do on the pitch and has shown me videos that have stressed the importance of my positioning.

"He's told me what he would like me to do to help me progress as a player."

There's no doubt that Pepe will kick on at Arsenal but it would be interesting to see if he finally has an answer for his 'toughest opponent' in a few years time.
