Manchester United fans are now right behind loan signing Odion Ighalo following initial scepticism over his deadline-day acquisition. The Nigerian striker, who has spent the past few years playing in China after leaving Watford in 2017, immediately endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful by confirming that he’s a boyhood United fan.Ighalo grew up supporting the Red Devils and happily accepted a pay cut in order to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.A short video from Man Utd’s training camp did the rounds earlier this week which has further helped to get fans on his side.It shows the 30-year-old taking part in various exercises, including a strength drill where he successfully holds the ball up under pressure.

Further details have now emerged about Ighalo’s warm-weather training camp regime - and it sounds like the Nigerian centre-forward is giving himself the best possible opportunity of making an instant impact at Old Trafford by working as hard as possible.

Per The Telegraph, Ighalo has been doing double sessions with Great Britain’s Olympic Taekwondo team to ensure he hits the ground running at United.

Performance coach Wayne Richardson has been ‘blown away’ with Ighalo’s attitude in recent days and believes United’s new No. 25 will be ready to make his debut against Chelsea on February 17.

“By doing these sessions, he wants to hit the ground running and you can see that from the work he’s doing behind the scenes,” Richardson said.

“From the moment he has stepped through the door, he is one of the few players who has blown me away. His determination, drive and willingness. He’s been doing double sessions and we’ve had to hold him back a bit and monitor him because he has fire in his stomach as a professional.”

A graphic posted by @utdreport neatly displays the information about Ighalo’s training regime from The Telegraph’s in-depth article…

As you can see, Ighalo has been getting up to speed with the help of four key exercises: a sprint test, weight training, ball work and endurance.

From working closely with Man Utd’s latest signing, Richardson is convinced Ighalo possesses the required determination to succeed with the Premier League giants.

“He is very softly spoken and humble,” the coach continued. “He knows the weight of the shirt on his shoulders but at the same time has that determination to succeed. Everything you give him in training he does, it’s not a problem. He knows he has to go in hitting the ground running.”

He added: “We were in on Thursday night until 10.30pm after also doing a session this morning. On Friday he went in for a massage and a recovery session before flying to Marbella for their camp.

“We’ve done testing. We’ve done endurance work, strength and conditioning, flexibility, mobility. There were sprint tests over five, 10, 15, 20 metres, one rep max, isometric pulls, and mid-thigh pulls to see where he is. From there we can give him endurance work, running box to box, change of direction, change of speed. Ankle, knee and hip movements look at his sprinting, what he can do off the ball, analysis with that is fed back to the player.”

If Ighalo fails to shine over the coming months, it certainly won’t be because of his attitude.

This is a player who is clearly determined to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with both hands.

“We have to prepare him in the best way we can,” Richardson said. “We’ve monitored him and put him on the GPS. We get the reports and feed them back so when he goes back to United he’s got something as near as possible to what he would get at a professional club.

“Some people come in and just do the training but this guy has embraced it all and hopefully we have prepared him the best we can.”
