Carlton Cole wasn’t a bad striker in his pomp.Best known for his two spells at West Ham, the former England international who was capped seven times by his country scored a reasonably decent number of goals at club level. In 397 appearances for eight clubs, Cole netted 86 goals. Not amazing, but not terrible either. He ended his career in 2017 following a brief spell with Persib Bandung in Indonesia. In December 2018, Cole returned to West Ham to work with the club’s academy players.

The 36-year-old can expect to receive some stick from the kids he coaches when he returns to work next week following his appearance on Saturday’s Soccer AM.

Cole was one of this weekend’s guests on the Sky Sports show and took part in the ‘Pro AM’ segment.

To say it didn’t go well would be an understatement.

The former Premier League centre-forward had the opportunity to win two football fans cash after answering a series of questions correctly.

But he clearly left his shooting boots at home because, well, he was absolutely shocking!

After missing several volleys and crossbar attempts, Cole had the chance to make amends with a final ‘double or quits’ penalty.

If he scored, the two fans would double the £200 they'd already won.

And if he missed, they’d leave with nothing.

Cole tried to channel his inner Andrea Pirlo by inexplicably going for the Panenka - but the ball sailed high over the bar, which meant the fans went home empty-handed.

Poor old Carlton was trending on Twitter before he knew it.

Here are just a handful of the tweets reacting to the former striker’s disasterclass…

If any football club was tempted to bring Cole out of retirement, it’s fair to assume they won’t be now!

Update

In fairness to Cole, and this is lovely, he still put the £400 in one of the fan's bank accounts...

Top man, Carlton!
