The ability to score goals is arguably the most important trait in football.

Hitting the back of the net wins matches, it's as simple as that. If you don't score goals, you won't win.

That's why those that are lethal in front of goal tend to go for so much money.

But it's not just attackers that have a knack for scoring goals. Defenders and sometimes goalkeepers can also chip in with a goal or two here and there.

We recently took a look at the all-time leading goal scorers in every playing position.

And now we've decided to look at the all-time leading Premier League goal scorers for every position.

GK: Paul Robinson, Tim Howard, Peter Schmeichel, Asmir Begovic, Brad Friedel - 1

Five goalkeepers managed to score a goal in the Premier League, although none have hit the back of the net twice yet.

Friedel scored in stoppage time against Charlton in 2004, although Blackburn would still lose the game as Claus Jensen netted a late winner seconds later.

Robinson, Howard and Begovic all scored their goal just clearing the ball from their own box.

While Schmeichel, who scored 11 times in his career, netted a late volley for Aston Villa in 2001.

LB: Leighton Baines - 32*

Baines has been a great servant to Everton. He possessed - and still possesses - a brilliant left-foot.

Brilliant from both free-kicks and penalties, Baines has managed 32 Premier League goals so far in his career.

Now 35 and behind Lucas Digne in the pecking order, he may not add to that tally.

CB: John Terry - 41

Terry is arguably the best centre-back in Premier League history due to his defensive capabilities.

But he was also a massive danger from set-pieces and corners. He would head almost anything.

With 41 goals, he's the top scoring defender in Premier League history.

RB: Steve Watson - 26

A versatile player, Watson could also play in midfield but spent much of his playing days playing at right-back.

He netted a hat-trick while playing for Everton against Leeds in the 2003/04 season.

LM/LW: Ryan Giggs - 109

Giggs' longevity at the top of the game will likely never be matched.

The Welshman made his debut for Man United in 1990. He remained a regular at the club until retiring in 2014.

In total he notched 109 Premier League goals. His best season came in 1993/94, where he netted 13 times.

CM: Frank Lampard - 177

Lampard was a central midfielder, but he still netted an incredible 177 Premier League goals.

That makes him the fifth highest goalscorer in Premier League history, even more than the likes of Thierry Henry and Robbie Fowler.

A central midfielder will likely never beat Lampard's Premier League tally.

RM/RW: Cristiano Ronaldo - 84

Although not prolific when he first joined Manchester United, Ronaldo came into life in the 2006/07 season.

In three seasons, Ronaldo scored 64 Premier League goals, including 31 in the 2007/08 campaign.

The likes of Sadio Mane (77) and Raheem Sterling (77) look set to overtake Ronaldo's tally soon, though.

ST: Alan Shearer - 260

Arguably the best player in Premier League history.

Shearer scored goals at will during his career for Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle.

His best spell came at Blackburn, where he won a Premier League title and helped himself to a ridiculous 112 goals in 138 games.

His tally is at threat, though. Harry Kane will be looking to break Shearer's goal record, while Sergio Aguero also has an outside chance.
