The subject of just who is the greatest superstar in WWE history is one that will always inspire debate amongst wrestling fans.

This question can never be definitively answered, of course, as each fan will have his or her own favourite performer that they consider to be the best.

However, a top 10 list recently compiled from over 92,000 votes certainly provides an insight into some of the top contenders for the crown.

Fans were asked to pick their 10 greatest superstars in a poll conducted by thetoptens.com - and the number one fan pick for the title of WWE's all-time best was none other than The Undertaker!

The 54-year-old legend has been with the company for nearly 30 years, headlining multiple pay-per-view events and winning seven world championships.

"The Phenom" is also revered by fans for his monumental streak of 21 consecutive victories at WrestleMania.

The historic run would come to an end at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, when "Taker" would lose to Brock Lesnar - a defeat which still ranks as one of the most shocking results in professional wrestling history.

Still featuring as a part-time attraction, the real-life Mark Calaway looks set to have a few more matches in him before he calls time on his in-ring career.

The fact that he is now heading into his fourth decade of WWE competition is a testament to the drive of the man, as well as to the longevity of the Undertaker character.

The Undertaker beat the likes of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels and The Rock - who each finished in second, third and fourth respectively in the poll.

Superstars such as John Cena, Hulk Hogan, Triple H and the recently-returning Edge also made the list, which is included in full below.

1. The Undertaker

2. Steve Austin

3. Shawn Michaels

4. The Rock

5. John Cena

6. Hulk Hogan

7. Triple H

8. Bret Hart

9. Randy Orton

10. Edge

Notable by their absence from the list are many key players from WWE's past and present. Names such as the Ultimate Warrior, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Roman Reigns and the aforementioned Lesnar all failed to make the top 10 as voted by the fans.

Another point worthy of consideration is the fact that the list is comprised entirely of male superstars. Given that the WWE has only fairly recently given its women's division the spotlight it deserves, it is perhaps not surprising that no female managed to crack the top 10 of an all-time list at this point.

If the same poll were to be taken in a few years time, it would not be a shock to see a Becky Lynch or Charlotte Flair make the cut. For now, though, it is The Undertaker that sits on top as many fans' greatest ever superstar.
