Kepa Arrizabalaga’s potential Chelsea replacement: Frank Lampard has six goalkeepers on shortlist

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea FC - Premier League

Kepa Arrizabalaga is currently facing a battle to save his Chelsea career.

The Spanish goalkeeper, who joined the Blues in a £71.6 million deal from Athletic Bilbao in August 2018, has come under heavy criticism from Chelsea supporters in recent weeks following a string of below-par performances.

It was reported shortly before Christmas that Frank Lampard has instructed his scouts to find a replacement for the 25-year-old shot-stopper, who has the worst save percentage of any Premier League ‘keeper.

And earlier this week, Spanish newspaper El Mundo claimed that Kepa’s close friends and family have attributed his poor form to recently splitting up with his long-term girlfriend.

Lampard dropped Kepa for last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City, opting to play Willy Caballero instead, and has now assembled a six-man shortlist of potential replacements to become Chelsea’s new No. 1.

This is according to the Daily Mail, who claim the six options are (in no particular order)…

Andre Onana | Ajax

The 23-year-old has impressed with Ajax in recent seasons and has previously revealed his interest of playing in the Premier League.

Capped 16 times by Cameroon, Onana’s preferred destination is reportedly Stamford Bridge - unfortunately for Kepa.

Nick Pope | Burnley

Burnley’s first-choice goalkeeper has been strongly linked with the Blues in recent weeks.

But the Mail add that Chelsea’s board ‘may have questions as to whether they would be getting a significantly better option than their £72m signing’ as Pope’s Premier League save percentage is only marginally better than Kepa’s.

Martin Dubravka | Newcastle United

Martin Dubravka signed a six-year deal with Newcastle in October, so he won’t come cheap if Chelsea make a formal move for the Slovakia international.

The 31-year-old is enjoying a decent season - but would he really be a better option than Kepa?

Mike Maignan | Lille

A former France Under-21 international, Maignan has spent his entire professional career with Lille after joining the Ligue 1 outfit from Paris Saint-Germain B.

The 24-year-old would be one of the cheaper options on this list.

Vicente Guaita | Crystal Palace

Aged 33, Vicente Guaita could do a job for Chelsea in the short-term but certainly isn’t one for the future, like Kepa.

The Blues have reportedly made enquiries about signing Guaita at the end of the season with his Palace contract poised to expire next year.

Gianluigi Donnarumma | AC Milan

Still just 20 years old, it feels like Gianluigi Donnarumma has been around for years.

The AC Milan and Italy goalkeeper would cost an absolute fortune to sign, but he’s arguably the best goalkeeper on Lampard’s shortlist.
