That's that - the transfer window and its propensity for gossip is over for another few months.

Or so you'd have thought...

No sooner had the calendar pages been turned to a new month than a wave of speculation began to link Lionel Messi with a shock Barcelona exit this summer following his row with sporting director Eric Abidal.

There is very little let-up in the news cycle when it comes to linking high-profile players with summer departures and that's especially going to be true after a quiet January.

We could be in for a massive summer as a consequence and The Independent have rounded up 50 of the biggest names who could be set for pastures new.

Some are almost certainties, while others are frankly a bit of a stretch - but none are completely out of the blue.

Mario Gotze

Gotze hasn't been the same since returning to Dortmund and he is out of contract this summer.

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell has just got better and better at Leicester and Chelsea could finally make their move at the end of the season.

Danny Ings

Ings had one shot at the big time with Liverpool but it was badly disrupted by injuries. The Southampton striker is now in fantastic form once again, scoring 17 goals this season, and is a contender for England's Euro 2020 squad.

Danny Rose

Rose admits he has no future under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham and is currently on loan at Newcastle.

Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen looked close to tears after he was taken off in the FA Cup against Southampton. The Belgian is soon out of contract and is reconciling himself to the fact that his time at Spurs is nearly up.

Joao Cancelo

Cancelo has proved an expensive mistake at Manchester City and he could be one of the first axed in Pep Guardiola's rebuilding job.

Timo Werner

Those Liverpool rumours just refuse to go away.

Moussa Dembele

The Lyon striker, 23, already has 19 goals in all competitions this season.

Hwang Hee-chan

Erling Haaland and Takumi Minamino have already left RB Salzburg and Hee-chan could be next, with Wolves and Leicester keen.

Kingsley Coman

Coman has had a remarkable career for a player of just 23 and he recently changed representatives, which will have alerted the vultures circling in the Premier League.

Emre Can

Can is on loan at Borussia Dortmund and judging by his debut, in which he scored an unbelievable curling effort, the German giants will be wanting to keep him.

Juan Foyth

The rise of Japhet Tanganga has come at the expense of Juan Foyth, who was compatriot Mauricio Pochettino's go-to back-up defender. Mourinho doesn't seem to rate him at all.

Layvin Kurzawa

Inter Milan and Arsenal are among the clubs ready to pounce when Kurzawa's contract expires at PSG.

Richarlison

Barcelona reportedly tried their luck in January, which should tell Everton that they face an uphill struggle to keep the Brazilian - unless they make a late charge for the Champions League.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Hojbjerg has been key to Southampton's turnaround and it has caught the eye of Tottenham, who now consider him among their prime targets.

Thomas Lemar

Lemar was once hot property before his disappointing spell at Atletico Madrid. That means where he was once wanted by Europe's elite, he's now been pegged back a notch and is being looked at by Wolves.

Isco

Real Madrid would be willing to let the playmaker leave, potentially for either Tottenham or Chelsea.

Luka Modric

The MLS is the most likely destination for the 34-year-old.

Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk appears happy at Liverpool and could be rewarded with a new contract to fend off interest from Juventus.

Olivier Giroud

The Chelsea striker is out of contract and out of favour, only staying at Stamford Bridge in January because the Blues couldn't find a replacement on Deadline Day.

Mesut Ozil

Mikel Arteta nearly sanctioned a January move to Qatar but Arsenal couldn't find a replacement in time. Ozil's wages have always proved an obstacle to him leaving the Emirates.

Boubakary Soumare

Lille's 20-year-old midfielder seems bound for the Premier League at some point, though it remains to be seen if that will be with Manchester United.

Adrian

Liverpool's back-up goalkeeper has shown what he can do when Alisson was out this season and could head to Spain in search of a number one spot.

Jude Bellingham

Birmingham are resigned to losing the 16-year-old, a target of both Man United and Man City.

Cengiz Under

A long-term target of Tottenham, Under's injury record could put off new clubs.

Lionel Messi

The Argentine was genuinely upset by Abidal's comments and is also unhappy at the fact Barcelona are no longer the force they once were. Messi's contract clause means he could leave for free.

Jorginho

The Italian was very much a Maurizio Sarri man and hasn't been totally happy since his former manager's departure. Jorginho admits he'd like to link up with Sarri again at Juventus.

Bertrand Traore

Traore didn't make the grade at Chelsea. The Lyon forward could now get another crack at English football with Bournemouth or Leicester.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal are clinging on to Aubameyang. No new contract, interest from Barcelona, and the likelihood that the Gunners will miss out on European football altogether next season. Surely he won't stay in north London.

Islam Slimani

Slimani has been on fire this season and was looked at by United before they landed on Odion Ighalo.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Following a string of mistakes and the worst save percentage in the league, Frank Lampard seems to have given up on the world's most expensive goalkeeper, already looking at alternatives like Nick Pope.

Josh King

King was inevitably unsettled by interest from United too. The Norwegian saw the Red Devils as his dream move and his heart is no longer going to be at Bournemouth.

Sergio Romero

Romero has never had any chance of replacing David de Gea on a regular basis and he's also had a difficult spell with knee injuries. Villarreal and Real Sociedad both want him.

Jack Grealish

The Aston Villa midfielder looks set for Manchester United though he has also been linked with a shock move to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

John Stones

The England international isn't even first choice in City's oft-hapless defence. Pep Guardiola doesn't seem convinced by him.

Leroy Sane

Bayern Munich have tried so many times to sign Sane but injuries have always got in the way.

Christopher Nkunku

RB Leipzig's success this season could see their squad decimated and Nkunku is just one talent they'll be fighting to keep hold of.

Dayot Upamecano

Arsenal think the 21-year-old could be the solution to their age-old defensive dilemmas.

Paul Pogba

Remember him? The arrival of Bruno Fernandes could finally signal the end of Pogba's second spell at Old Trafford.

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha isn't having his best season at Crystal Palace but if he were to really push for a move, Bayern Munich - as well as a host of top Premier League clubs - would be fighting for his signature.

Kai Havertz

Bayer Leverkusen would demand a huge fee for the in-demand youngster, who Liverpool have been monitoring for quite some time.

Neymar

The Brazilian is on the sidelines yet again at PSG, where he's never truly settled. If Barcelona were to give up on Ousmane Dembele their former forward could be presented with a return.

Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe's row with Thomas Tuchel will have had PSG sweating. The World Cup winner is viewed by Real Madrid as their next 'galactico'.

Ryan Fraser

Bournemouth have allowed him to run down his contract, which could be good news for suitors like Arsenal.

Gareth Bale

Bale is back in the headlines over his attitude at Real Madrid. The Welshman was linked with a return to Tottenham in January.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho has been in electric form for Borussia Dortmund yet has still managed to alienate many at the club. The German press also recently laid into him over what they deemed an extravagant lifestyle and it's long been expected that he'll head back to his native England soon.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Real Madrid are among the clubs who like the look of Napoli's centre-back, Koulibaly establishing himself in recent seasons as one of the best in Europe.

Willian

Willian is out of contract at the end of the season and there's no sign of a new deal being put on the table with talks having broken down. The Brazilian has always been on Barcelona's radar.

Dries Mertens

The Napoli forward is in the final few months of his contract and came close to joining Chelsea last month.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan handed in a transfer request at PSG in January but a move away never materialised, partly due to his wages.

Let's hope, for everyone's sake, that some of these sagas finally reach their conclusion in the coming months.

We could be in for a remarkable summer window.
