Liverpool are reportedly interested in re-signing Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho was hoping to push on and become one of the very best players in the world when he left Liverpool in 2018.

But that hasn’t gone to plan.

Coutinho’s spell at Barcelona was a nightmare. Across one-and-a-half seasons, he netted just 21 times in 76 games.

That’s not what Barca expected after paying £142m for him.

Thus, he was deemed surplus to requirements and shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich at the start of this season.

The German club had the option to sign him for €100m at the end of his spell.

However, Coutinho has disappointed once again, netting just seven times in 27 games.

Bayern have reportedly already decided they won’t be signing him permanently for that much money and, in a desperate attempt to get some return for him, Barca have slashed their asking price.

Mundo Deportivo reported on the weekend that Barcelona are willing to accept offers between €80m-€90m (£68m-£76m) for Coutinho.

And now, according to the Daily Express, Liverpool are interested in bringing their former player back to Anfield.

They report that Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz is their top target.

However, if Jurgen Klopp is unable to get his first choice, he could then turn his attention to trying to re-sign Coutinho.

That’s surely something that would divide Liverpool fans.

Coutinho was brilliant during his six season spell at the club.

He netted 54 times in 201 games and helped them become the club they are today.

But the manner of which he left the club will likely not have been forgotten by many fans of the Merseyside club.

In order to push through his dream move, Coutinho simply refused to play to try and convince the club to sell.

That, of course, was not something that went down well with some Liverpool fans, who would no doubt have enjoyed Coutinho’s struggles in the past few years.

But to get him for just £67m, less than half what they managed to get for him, would be a steal.

He’s not past his best; at just 27 years old he is still yet to hit his prime.

They need a creative midfielder, too. Coutinho still hasn’t been properly replaced since his departure.

If he has a genuine desire to play for the club, Klopp should try and bring back Coutinho this summer.
