Former European 3,000m steeplechase champion Gulcan Mingir and Albanian sprinter Klodiana Shala have been provisionally suspended after failing a retest from samples taken at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Athletics Integrity Unity confirmed that the Turkish athlete Mingir tested positive for the prohibited substance Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone whilst the presence of Stanozolol was found in Shala's doping sample.

Mingir, 30, won both the European under-23 title in 2011 and the European senior title in June 2012 but did not make it past the heats at the London Olympics in August that summer. Her European title will still stand if she is retroactively banned for doping at the Olympics - because it came earlier.

Albanian sprint star Shala, represented her home nation at the Olympic Games in 2000, 2004 and 2008. She was expected to run in 2012 but withdrew from the heats with an injury. Shala claimed a bronze medal at the 2005 Mediterranean Games over the 400m.

Since 2016, the International Olympic Committee decided to step up its retesting of samples from previous Olympics following revelations of widespread doping in Russia and numerous cover-ups in the track and field community.

Including Mingir and Shala, the total number of doping athletes at London 2012 currently stands at 126 in all sports - with 82 cases coming from Athletics alone, though more precisely, 11 of them being from Turkey.

At the London Olympics, Turkey lost two of their five medals after retroactive bans of Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut who finished first and second in the women's 1500m. Belarus athlete Natallia Kareiva and Russia's Yekaterina Kostetskaya were also banned in that same race.

Both Mingir and Shala have been provisionally suspended pending hearings in their cases.
