Gianni Infantino has admitted that FIFA isn't doing enough to capitalise on the success of last summer's World Cup.

Speaking at the International Sports Press Association conference in Budapest, the FIFA President indicated that "if we wait for others to invest (in women's football) we can wait maybe a long time."

Infantino spoke with emotion about last summer's tournament, declaring that "we just lived the best World Cup in France."

"What people saw is that actually, [women's football] is a real sport. There are real athletes playing with technical skills. It’s not boring. It’s not slow. It’s a real sport which brings to you the same emotions as men’s football," the FIFA president explained.

"The stadiums in France were vibrating. And in terms of the TV audience, countries that are not usually famous for their women's sport had a higher audience for their women's national team than their men's national team in the same period," Infantino added.

He went onto confirm that "(FIFA) need to invest and do more."

Speaking at the event, Infantino revealed his ambitions to launch a Club World Cup in women's football which would follow in similarity to the men's competition that was held in Qatar late last year. He also spoke of wanting to launch a Women’s World League to allow "national teams at different levels to play more often."

The Swiss-Italian announced that his proposed plans to expand the women's game had initially been blocked two years ago but stressed his commitment to continually fight for the women's game, declaring that "we will bring [our plans] up again.

As well as calling upon other organisations to "do better", Infantino transparently held himself and FIFA to account, acknowledging that "in FIFA's administration we have over 40% women, but of course this is not enough."

"It is important that we start behaving in football like modern people. Women are 50% of the world's population. We speak about racism and discrimination but we speak also about gender equality. "Gender equality on the pitch or outside the pitch in the rooms, in the meeting rooms, in the councils, in the management," the FIFA President said.

Infantino didn't leave without considering the idea of a biennial Women's World Cup, that was proposed by the French FA President, Noel Le Graet.

"The French president of football proposed that we play the World Cup every two years because it was so fantastic in France and it can boost the event."

"Let’s discuss. Let’s not have taboos and see what we can do."
