Liverpool’s current team are on course to be remembered as one of the greatest we’ve ever seen.

The Reds are on course to win the Premier League title with a record points tally after winning 24 of their 25 fixtures so far.

If Liverpool win their next two games they will equal the points tally set by Manchester United’s legendary treble-winning team from 1999, which is pretty remarkable.

Man Utd’s 1999 team won 22, drew 13 and lost three of their Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are well on course to seal well over 100 points.

It wouldn’t be a shock if they also go on to win the FA Cup and retain the Champions League, they’re that good.

However, Ferguson’s former assistant Steve McClaren believes only one current Liverpool player would get into United’s 1999 team - and that’s Virgil van Dijk.

"Virgil van Dijk next to Jaap Stam, that would be invincible,” he told Sky Sports. “Nobody would get past them.

"But for me, seriously, only Van Dijk would get into that team. When you look at that Manchester United team, that is leadership throughout the whole team, and leadership was the key.

"Liverpool are developing that now."

Sky Sports have given football fans the opportunity to choose their own combined XI from the two teams on their website - and it’s actually extremely difficult.

Nevertheless, we’ve given it a go - and here’s who we’ve gone for…

Peter Schmeichel gets in ahead of Alisson Becker as the Dane was the best goalkeeper in the world in the mid-to-late-1990s.

Liverpool fans will say that Trent Alexander-Arnold has to be in ahead of Gary Neville, but Neville was arguably a better defender than Liverpool’s right-back is right now.

Van Dijk partners his Dutch compatriot Jaap Stam at the heart of the defence, while Andrew Robertson is given the nod over Denis Irwin - but only just.

Paul Scholes and Roy Keane walk into the team, but it choosing between Ryan Giggs and David Beckham was virtually impossible.

It would have felt wrong leaving out Giggs, one of the greatest players in United’s history, so Beckham will have to settle for a place on the bench.

And upfront we’ve gone for Liverpool’s formidable front three: Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole can consider themselves a little unfortunate - both were obviously top strikers in the late-1990s - but selecting either one of them ahead of Firmino wouldn’t have been right. It was either the pair of them or none at all.
