Scoring goals is the hardest thing in football.

You can only win a match if you’re able to stick the ball in the back of the net.

There’s a reason why attacking players cost more than defenders. Because they’re match-winners.

But goals can come from anywhere on the pitch.

In the modern-day, full-backs bomb forward and are expected to contribute to goals on a regular basis. Meanwhile, many centre-backs trot forward for attacking set-pieces as the big men attempt to get their head on it.

Previously, we’ve revealed the most goals scored by starting position of all-time, in Premier League history and in the Premier League this season.

But now, we bring you the most goals scored by starting position in Europe’s top five leagues this season, as per WhoScored.com.

There are a few rules, though.

Only league goals count.

Only goals scored when playing in their starting position count - i.e if a player is a left-winger but had to play as centre-forward and scored, his goal won’t count towards his left wing position.

And players were tied in a position, the one who played the fewest minutes per goal has been selected.

Let’s take a look:

RB: Matt Doherty | Wolves | 3 goals

Doherty was a must-have in Fantasy Football last season but he seems to have gone slightly under the radar this campaign. But he’s still managed three goals in the league for Wolves.

CB: Martin Hinteregger | Frankfurt | 6 goals

Hinteregger is ‘only’ 6ft 1in but he’s clearly brilliant in the year.

Six goals in 15 league matches is a decent record for a striker, let alone a centre-back!

CB: Domenico Criscito | Genoa | 4 goals

The 33-year-old Genoa captain has led by example with five goals in 15 games this season. However, one of his strikes came when he was playing left-back, so only four count.

LB: Theo Hernandez | AC Milan | 5 goals

Hernandez has been one positive in a poor Milan season with five goals from left-back - the club’s top goalscorer in Serie A.

CM: Wylan Cyprien | Nice | 7 goals

Cyprien has been brilliant this season, notching seven goals from his 19 appearances in Ligue 1. That’s despite Nice sitting 11th in the table.

CM: Daniel Parejo | Valencia | 6 goals

Parejo bagged nine goals in La Liga last season and he’s managed six in 18 games this time around. He’s come a long way since his loan spell at QPR in the Championship.

CAM: Neymar | PSG | 9 goals

He’s only played 14 games but Neymar has been banging in the goals when he’s been on the pitch.

Neymar has actually scored 13 league goals but his versatility has seen him play in a variety of positions - often on the left-wing.

RW: Lionel Messi | Barcelona | 13 goals

Messi may not be having his greatest season but he’s still managed 14 goals in 18 matches in the league. He scored one of them as a centre-forward.

LW: Marcus Rashford | Man Utd | 11 goals

Some say that Rashford is better down the middle than on the left.

But he’s played the majority of his matches on the left, scoring 11 goals playing in that position.

Rashford has actually scored a further three goals playing down the middle.

ST: Ciro Immobile | Lazio | 25 goals

The 29-year-old is on fire this season. A ridiculous 25 goals in 23 Serie A games has seen Lazio compete for the title.

Can he keep it up?

So, who misses out?

Cristiano Ronaldo has managed 20 goals but misses out thanks to him switching from left-wing to centre forward this season.

It’s a similar story of Mohamed Salah, who has scored 14 goals. However, he’s also scored many of them while playing down the middle.

And spare a thought for Robert Lewandowski. His 22 goals in 21 matches aren’t enough to take Immobile’s spot as centre forward.
