Liverpool have been a class above everyone else in the Premier League this season. The Reds currently enjoy a 22-point lead over their nearest challengers in Manchester City, failing to win just once in 25 matches. But even once this incredible campaign concludes, Jurgen Klopp can’t afford not to strengthen his squad over the summer. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will see Liverpool be without a handful of senior players between January and February, including key forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.Their absence during a crucial period of the season could significantly impact the Reds, though less so if Klopp can attract adequate cover for his two main goalscoring sources.

Perhaps that’s why, according to Sport Bild's Christian Falk, the Liverpool boss is interested in signing RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner - whose contract reportedly has a €60 million (£51 million) release clause which can be activated this summer.

The Germany international has been in lethal form for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this season, scoring 25 goals in 30 appearances for the Bundesliga title challengers.

Leipzig are a single point behind Bayern Munich with 21 matches played, and Werner’s invaluable contribution to the cause hasn’t gone unnoticed around Europe.

“When you score 20 goals as a 23-year-old in a season then, of course, there is interest. That's clear,” he told Kicker, via the Mirror.

"But, right now, I am not thinking about what happens in the future.

“We are going into many important games. That's what I want to focus on now.

“I can still contemplate my future later.”

He added: “What do you say if a club comes knocking in the next two weeks, a club which is one of the favourites to win the Champions League and makes an incredible offer?

“Most likely every player would think about it.”

Werner will likely be spoilt for choice once the summer transfer window comes around, with Manchester United and Chelsea joining Liverpool on his lengthy list of admirers.

Real Madrid and Bayern are also thought to be keeping tabs on the prolific 23-year-old.

Despite facing rife competition for his signature, Liverpool would arguably be the most attractive option at this stage of his career.

The chance to work under Klopp at Anfield is an opportunity few would pass up - and imagine the havoc Werner could wreak alongside Salah and Mane.

On paper, €60 million is a small price to pay for a front three like that.
