Not many footballers play after their 42nd birthday - but Gianluigi Buffon is one of them. The Italian legend celebrated his latest birthday on January 28 and his illustrious career now spans a remarkable 25 years.Buffon made his first appearance since turning 42 for Juventus against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia on Thursday evening. The veteran ‘keeper pulled off several fine saves on the night but will probably feel that he could have done more to prevent Ante Rebic’s opening goal.Fortunately for Buffon, though, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late equaliser after Juve were awarded a controversial penalty following a VAR review.

After the match, Buffon managed to get the shirt of one of Milan’s substitutes: Daniel Maldini.

Maldini, 18, is the son of Italian football legend Paolo and the grandson of the equally famous Cesare.

The teenager, who plays as an attacking midfielder, made his senior debut for the Rossoneri after coming on against Hellas Verona earlier this month.

And Buffon wanted the youngster’s shirt in order to build his growing father-son shirt collection.

After the match, Buffon told reporters: “In my collection I have [Enrico] Chiesa and son, [Lillian] Thuram and son, [George] Weah and son, and now Maldini and son. I’m waiting for their grandchildren!”

Enrico Chiesa’s son is Federico, who plays for Fiorentina and has represented the Italian national team 17 times since 2018.

Lillian Thuram’s son, Marcus, is a France Under-21 international who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

And George Weah, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1995, is the father of Timothy Weah, who played with Buffon at Paris Saint-Germain and now plies his trade for Lille.

You wouldn’t bet against Buffon eventually getting the shirt of Cristiano Ronaldo Jr one day - the guy is eternal!
